3D-Printed Substrate Coated With Photocatalytic Film Removes Organic Pollutants in Water

The promising discovery by researchers from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) could efficiently purify contaminated water.

Led by IOCAS Prof. Zhang Dun, the team developed a 3D-printed polymer substrate coated with a novel in-situ growing bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) film using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method.

The study, published in the Separation and Purification Technology journal on May 4, 2023, stated that iodine spaces were introduced into the BiOI crystals during the growing process of films.

This process enhanced the film, increasing BiOI internal electric field and electron density. It also improved photoinduced carrier separation and transmission efficiency, making iodine defects engineering BiOI better than stoichiometry BiOI.

"The film exhibits good photocatalytic activity and cyclic stability on photodegrading organic compounds and sterilizing microorganism," said Xu Xuelei, first author of the study, emphasizing the film’s promising properties effective in purifying organic pollutants and microorganisms.
